THE CAPID is a cooperative of experienced indigo dyers and young artisans working to preserve traditional textile designs and techniques while innovating and pushing the boundaries of the craft. A majority of our members are women who have learned the craft of indigo dyeing from their mothers and are now transmitting it to the younger generations.
Our traditional fabricsare hand-crafted in Dogon Country by members of our cooperative with the goal of creating a viable cottage textile industry to help sustain the local economy in the face of climate change and global insecurity. All our cotton is grown, spun and woven in Mali. Inspired by Mali’s ancestral cotton culture, the indigo dyers of mythic Dogon country create fabrics that are both beautiful and respectful of the environment.
The CAPID works with African designers, seamstresses and tailors to produce the unique IndigoDogon brand of innovative fashions and textiles for the home, using eco-responsible fabrics and methods.
We reuse scrap material to create accessories and don’t stock and over-produce to order to avoid waste.
Fabric is a means of self-expression, reflecting the personality and identity of the wearer. Our line of modern and traditional garments offers something for every taste and personality.
The CAPID works in collaboration with the Centre Indigo Dogon to offer training workshops and to promote and market our textiles. Our cooperative has forged links with designers in the US, Canada and Europe who provide input and inspiration and who are interested in working with our traditional handcrafted fabrics.
